Langham House Close was designed in 1955 and this block built 1957/58 by James Stirling & James Gowan. The development is usually referred to in the architectural literature as their "Ham Common Flats". It reflects the influence of Le Corbusier's Maison Jaoul and the De Stijl Group but
mixes the modern with the vernacular. Paradoxically for a development often thought of part of the 'brutalist' movement, it is self consciously over designed with touches of irony like the concrete 'gargoyles', and it was a privately funded development rather than social housing. This was Stirling's first major work and led on to him designing the Engineering Building at Leicester University in 1963 which confirmed his reputation. Other later buildings include the History Library at Cambridge, the Clore Wing at the Tate and the Braun Factory in Germany.
LEASE 999 years from 1958 and the freehold held in common by the residents.
